First Responder Mental Health |
The nature of a first responder's occupation regularly puts them in physical and psychological harm's way. First responders face unique occupational challenges that lead to greater risks of developing psychological injuries including depression, panic disorder, generalized anxiety, adjustment disorder and post-traumatic stress. Repeated exposure to multiple traumatic stressors can also exacerbate pre-existing psychological conditions.
Due to inherent high stress levels and intense psychological demands, it is imperative first responders maintain their mental health. Early intervention can restore psychological functioning and prevent the development of persistent mood disturbances that can impact quality of life.
